Monday 13th June. Grimsby.
Spent yesterday evening with Dave and Steve who have abandoned their round Britain trip because of bad weather and are returning to Lymington in their Vancouver 27. Lovely Sam Smiths bitter at £2 a pint and the friendliest club I have ever been to.
A town in poor shape since the Icelanders won the cod wars. No more fishing but somehow it still smells of fish.
Apologies for a short history lesson, but I just read that there´s a small Spanish connection to Grimsby and it would, of course, be wine: it was founded in the 9th century by the Danes. During the 12th century, Grimsby developed into a busy little port. Ships brought timber from Norway and wine (the drink of the upper class) from France and Spain. Coal was brought by sea along the coast from Newcastle. In the Middle Ages wool was exported from Grimsby.

Maybe it should be renamed ''Grim-as-can-be'' ??
ReplyDeleteHope the Lymington lads' experience is not a bad omen for Nomad (Steve)
