Don´t worry about that. They will be able to tell immediately who is a beginner and who has the expertise. I remember some of the lock-keepers being a bit scathing with the novices. They will see that Brendan is in a different league completely. He will still need help, but it will be given with their total respect (and admiration) for going single-handed.
On behalf of Margaret, I insist you make as much noise around those ducks as possible! She was such a tetchy old crone who lived in that cottage ... obviously resented any craft that moored in front of her & her beloved webbed friends
